Welcome to the Pet Grooming Business Podcast with me, Bill Betts, where we give practical business advice to help you grow your pet grooming business. This podcast is sponsored by Low Pay, the low rate payment app that gives you more. So without further ado, let's get going.
Hi, everyone, and welcome back to this next podcast. What's this one going to be about? This one's gonna be a little bit different than my normal, normal ones. Hopefully you enjoy listening to a bit more of me. I've got some good interviews coming up as well, but this one, I'm gonna play you a bit of feedback from a client. And it took me a little bit by surprise. We were sitting on our normal Monday coaching call. We got to about 11 o' clock and kind of done all the, the thought leadership that I had to do and spoke to clients and everything and sort of just opened it up to the floor and said, you know, is there anything that you'd like to share or anything that you'd like to, to ask?
And opened up to the floor and this is what Lexi said. All I wanted to say was this morning I added up my July and I've first time ever tipped over £6,000. Wow.
Never. I got £12 off it, I think in May, I'm like, something silly like 8, 1988 or something. And I was like, oh. And then this morning I just so happened to add it to. I thought, oh, while I'm on my spreadsheet before this, these dogs turned up and I was like, 6039, I think it was. And I was like, oh, that's the first ever time I've done that ever. And I couldn't believe it when I tipped the five grand, let alone loan the six. And if I'm right in thinking you actually cut your days down to four.
Yeah, I've done it. Yeah, I've done fully. I had a really hard, horrific mindset about doing it, but I did it and I had a week off.
You're on fire. Don't know what's happened there. Cat grooming, I think, has tipped me over. It was. That was 6 or 700 of it. So it was a big, a big jump in money for cats. And I only did five of them. So we've, we've cut our days down, we've diversified our business and we're bringing in more money. Shit, ton more money. When I tell you, like, I was just thinking, I think I've been on the program 20 months or something like that, or nearly 21 months or something.
And I started with you at 1800amonth. No, 1800 pounds a month? Yeah.
I think my best month had been like a two grand month when I first started the program. And my goal was like two and a half to three. And never in a million years, less than two years later did I think I'll be going, oh, I've just tipped the sixth grant. I cannot get over it. I cannot get over it. Every time I hit a goal like this, I'm like, I can't actually believe it. It's not a bad return on investment, is it? Not at all.
Paid for you in one month there. Gosh.
But yeah, I'm really proud of it and thank you for everything. I would never ever have got here ever this quickly, if ever, without it. So as you can see, I don't know if you can hear it in my voice, but I was quite blown away actually by how powerful that was and what she had to say. So basically, since joining our business program, Lexi has gone from earning 1800 pounds per month and that took me, I was a bit shocked actually, to this month earning her highest month of £6,000.
It's an incredible achievement and I wanted to go through how, how she's done this with you just to give you an idea and the flavor of how we've worked together and how, how she's made these changes. So 1800 pounds a month to 6000 pounds a month. Hopefully that 6000 pound won't be an anomaly and she'll carry it on. I know it's part of her goals to carry.
Not only that she increased her income from 1800 to 6000, but she's also cut down her days to four days a week, which is incredible. And I know she, she probably does a few too many dogs for my liking, but she's fine with that. I do check in with her now and then to make sure she's not stretching herself, but she's, she's happy with the number of dogs that she does per day. But believe me, they're not, it's not massive amounts. It's not like probably sort of four to five dogs a day really.
So you might be sitting there thinking, or how the hell, you know, it might just feel a little bit unachievable or it might feel a little bit like just, you know, how can someone actually do that? So I just wanted to go through with you a brief overview of how she did that. I checked in with her this morning just to double check some of the points to make sure they're Correct. And you can listen to her story as well.
I did a podcast with Lexi. So Lexi's been grooming for many, many years and has worked as a tutor. She's also a fitness instructor, all sorts of stuff, but landed on grooming. She works on her own and she works in her mum's garage. So she's a single mom, has two kids, sort of a teenager and a, a kid in junior school, which I think is important to note because, you know, it makes you, makes you know, that a bit of background to her and, and what she has to deal with on a day to day basis.
But you know, the salon's not too far away but it's important for her to be able to have a bit more time now. And that was one of her sort of priorities to, to remove Saturdays from her business so that she had more time with her children. So yeah, she came to us with many years experience. I think she said her average price was about £35 per dog and it was kind of like, get them in, get them out, get them in, get them out. And obviously there's physical issues around that with our bodies having groomed for so many years, mentally it's really busy as well.
And it's not always what we want for the dogs either. So it doesn't always align with our values. But quite often we feel that, you know, to make the money that we want to make within this industry, we need to just do dog after dog after dog. She was teeth cleaning when she met me, but wasn't really confident or pushing it, but not offering anything else. So we kind of have a, a six step process on the business program and we look at your business from like a, from a whole perspective.
So we're not a marketing course, we're not a pricing course. We're not, we're not. Well, we're not a course. That's, that's the start of, you know, you don't join the program and pay, you can pay monthly, but you don't pay and then just go right after, after six months, I've had enough, I'm going to cancel my subscription or after a, after 12 months or you don't join. And I say, right, you've got 12 months to sort your business out and then you're off sort of thing. It's a business program and I designed it as a business program with lifelong membership because I want to work with people to make better businesses and I want to help people.
So some people learn in, in different speeds. Like some people have different things going on in their lives. So you know, sometimes business takes a back burner. So it's not like you've got 12 months to complete it and you're done. So some people get to their results a lot quicker than others and that's because they might be more goal driven or they might need the money more, or maybe they've got more free time. But everyone gets there at some point in their own way, hopefully. So anyway, she joined us a while ago now and at the time working from home, doing dog grooming primarily, no sort of add ons, no, not much teeth cleaning and stuff.
So we, we focus on sort of six main areas in the program. So we, we look at structure of your business, we look at pricing, we look at add ons, we look at marketing, we look at your mindset and implementation and there's no real order for that and they all kind of interlink and cross over with each other. So when you join the program, we're now doing like a, a roadmap call, which is about an hour and a half call where we have a really good overlook at your business and come up with like a three month plan to get you going.
This podcast is sponsored by Low Pay. Low pay is half the price of. Sum up and Zettle. So you keep more of the money that you earn. Rate start at 0.79%. But when Lexie joined us she structure wise, obviously she, she knew what she was doing but made some adjustments around her bank account, made some adjustments around her payment machine and started looking at her diary and how she onboarded customers pricing wise, you know, average price around 35 pounds which was far too low for what, for what she was doing.
So we helped her massively around pricing. But that really did start with raising financial awareness and helping Lexi to understand her finances in real detail. So understanding her personal finances which then links into her business finances because when you're a sole trader or running a small business and obviously the money you're generating in that small business pretty much goes to pay for your lifestyle. So we obviously have our money coach, Fanny Snaith on the program and Lexi really enjoyed working with Fanny and actually took some extra additional courses with Fanny to really help with her financial mindset.
And this really helped her to start introducing pots, understanding her expenses, making sure that we're saving, making sure that debt is prioritized and paid off. And this has really helped her to then understand what she needs from her business and what she needs pricing wise as well. Obviously we've helped her with her Fear around pricing and how to speak to her customers around pricing, how to put her prices up, what to put her prices up by and then obviously how to talk to new customers and sell at higher prices.
So that's all covered under the sort of pricing part of the business. Add on wise, you know, we, we're a great believer that if you can meet your target by doing a couple of dogs a day, then why not? If you can meet your financial target by doing two dogs, why not? And if, you know what we look at is how can we serve those dogs and those owners even more? So, you know, yeah, we are looking at teeth cleaning and mud, these sheds and spa packages or treatments depending on how you feel about them.
Nagay, Ayurveda, next immune products, all sorts of stuff like that. With the focus being that how. The focus being on how do we help that dog. We've got a dog in front of us, we've got skills, we've got knowledge, we've got products, we've got stuff that we can use to help them. How can we help that dog? So we kind of come away from a haircut centric mindset where every dog has to have a haircut and that's all we look at. And we're kind of looking at the dog as a whole and making sure that we can if identify anything that we can help that dog with and therefore helping the owner as well.
And by serving that dog and that owner then obviously that helps us with our income as well. So Lexi went out and got more confidence with teeth cleaning. Obviously the pricing comes in with that as well and now is looking to make sure she helps every dog that she possibly can, when she can. So that was a.
Obviously helped her finances as well because when we come from a place of service, the finances money is a fair exchange so it helps your finances. She's also came and trained with us for program members. We helped them with a one day cat grooming course to get them, introduced them to cat grooming and get them started. And she came over and trained with us and has introduced cat grooming to her course. And I think when you listen to the result that she got £700 of this month's results was on cat grooming alone.
So adding additional services to your business can help diversify your business. So maybe like times in August, like August when we are now everyone goes on the, everyone goes on holiday, people go on holiday and our dog bookings drop off a bit. But when we diversify with teeth cleaning and cat grooming we can pick up extra business using those. So remember, not everything has to revolve around haircuts, marketing assets. Again, Lexi put in loads of effort and work with this. She worked with our graphic designer and brand mentor to get ideas around how to improve her branding, her logo, and then went out to the open market and got her logo and branding redesigned.
She also invested in a website and this is paid off time and time again as she's getting loads of inquiries, loads of new business through her website. And then with her structure, she's obviously making sure, picking and choosing the customers that she really wants to work with. So she's also learned about going out onto social media and understanding the power of know like and trust. So we helped her with that. And she's something that she does a lot more is getting her face out on the, on the social media.
So she's worked really hard on marketing assets and I think you'll see, well, you see from the results that that's actually really working well for her. New inquiries are coming in where you can pick and choose the people that you want to work with and test higher prices as well. And then obviously none of this happens without actually taking action. So Lexi's really leaned into the process. She's on probably 95% of the coaching calls. So she turns up regularly, asks questions, contributes, empowers others in the community, and she also leans into the accountability buddy scheme as well.
So she teamed up with another groomer and they set themselves little tasks to keep themselves accountable. And leaning into that process has really helped her to get the results that she's seeing now. And then the sixth step is the mindset. And again, Lexi makes great use of our mindset mentor, Louise, coming onto her calls, discussing her fears, being vulnerable around the mindset issues that she has, asking questions, listening. But again, you know, taking action and working on that mindset and improving that mindset. So, you know, it's a, it's a whole holistic approach to your business, if I'm allowed to use that word, holistic.
But we look at the, the overall picture of your business and we work on all of it rather than just one specific. And everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. You know, I'm working with people that are graphic designers and they're good at marketing, but maybe they're not great with finance or working with people that just have a little bit of everything, a little bit of skill and everything and just need to improve what they've got. So I wanted to sort of give you a story behind that amazing result that Lexi's got.
Hopefully she will stay consistently in the five to six thousand pound mark is an incredible achievement for her and her family. We are all really proud for her and you know she's an inspiration to our community and will, you know, will help anyone who wants any help and advice and the guidance. So amazing times but I wanted to make sure that you kind of got some context around that, that piece of footage, understand how we've helped her and understand how she's got the results that she did.
